JOHN CHEEVER’s Short Fiction Game The Swimmer ® was invented during the Manic Depression of John Cheever. Mr Cheever, like many other Americans, was a conflicted bisexual alcoholic at the time, and he worked out the details of this and other games primarily to amuse himself during this period. Prior to the Depression, Cheever and his wife lived in the resort town of Scarborough-on-Hudson, Westchester County. When it came to populating his game board with personalities, Cheever naturally adopted those of his fellow bibulous depressives and adulterers.
